How to Make Stagecoach Curtains

Among the easiest curtains to make are stagecoach valances. These curtains consist of a single panel attached to a rod and rolled to a desired height, then tied with ribbon. You can leave stagecoach curtains alone on a window or pair them with coordinating curtain panels placed over the valances. These simple, casual curtains work best in informal rooms, like sun rooms and family rooms.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your curtain rod and the height of your window. Add 1 inch to the width and 4 inches to the height. Purchase two coordinating fabrics in these dimensions.

    • 2

Place the fabrics on top of each other on your work table, wrong side facing out. Pin them together along the edges.

    • 3

Sew the two fabrics together with a half-inch seam along the bottom, sides and all but 4 inches of the top.

    • 4

Turn the fabrics inside out through the hole you left in the top seam, then sew the gap closed.

    • 5

Iron the edges of your valance to make them straight and even.

    • 6

Fold over the top 3 inches of the valance. Pin it in place, then the top edge to the valance itself, forming a loop to hold the curtain rod.

    • 7

Cut two ribbons two and a half times as tall as the window itself. (Ribbons for a 10-inch window would be 25 inches)

    • 8

Fold one ribbon in half and drape it over the top of the valance 6 inches from the left edge, with half of the ribbon behind the valance and half of the ribbon in front of the valance. Pin the ribbon in place.

    • 9

Repeat Step 8 with the other ribbon, positioning the ribbon 6 inches from the right edge.

    • 10

Sew the ribbons to the back of the valance at the top. Be careful not to sew the pouch for the curtain rod shut.

    • 11

Cut the edges of the ribbons at an angle and spray them with fray-prevention product.

    • 12

Hang the stagecoach valance on the curtain rod. Start at the bottom and roll the curtain up to your desired height. Pin the roll in place, then tie the ribbons at the bottom of the roll to support the curtain.
