How to Install Interior Log Siding

Interior log siding will dramatically change the appearance of a room, immediately turning even the darkest and dreariest basement into a relaxing area with a lodge feel. There are a variety of siding companies that offer interior log veneers in many styles and colors. Installing the veneers requires minimal materials. Having the help of assistants can reduce the time needed to complete the project, as this is an example of a job that benefits from assemble-line techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the entire interior wall where the log veneers will be installed. Find and mark clearly every stud in the wall using a stud finder. Wipe the wall clean with a rag.

    • 2

Set the log siding veneers against the wall and hold them in place with the help of assistants. Hammer the veneers in place using 8d nails, setting in the nails where the studs were located. Pound in at least two nails through the veneer and into each stud. Continue to set the veneers in place, overlapping them slightly or leaving a space, depending on the design and style of the veneer.

    • 3

Coat the surface of the veneers with either the included stain or a stain purchased separately. Apply the stain in long, smooth strokes, following the wood grain and not worrying about getting excess stain on the wood between the veneers. Let the first coat dry for two hours. Apply a second coat of stain using the same procedure. Let the second coat dry for two hours. Repeat this process until the dried veneers are the depth of color you want.

    • 4

Apply a coat of sealant using either the sealant included in the veneer siding package or a sealant purchased separately. Brush on the first coat of sealant in the same direction as the stain, using an even lighter coat than the stain. Let the sealant dry for two hours. Repeat the process to add at least three total coats of sealant to provide protection against dirt, mold and water.

Spread grout, if recommended for your veneers, in between the logs, if desired, using a putty knife. Apply a 1/2-inch layer of grout, and smooth out the visible surface so it dries in an attractive way. Let the grout dry for 48 hours.
