How to Make a Window Awning for a Kid's Bedroom

Add an awning to your child’s bedroom window to give the room a café feel or to add a unique window decoration. Home stores sell indoor awning kits and the matching fabric awnings to go with them. Instead of buying the fabric awning, make your own to customize the colors and patterns to fit your kid’s room decor. Choose the perfect fabrics and create your own awning in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of fabric equal to the length of the awning kit's top bar plus 1 inch and the width of the awning bar's arm plus 1 inch. The top and bottom bars are the bars that hold the fabric. The arms are the bars that attach to the wall to hold the bottom bar away from the wall. Choose fabric that matches your child’s room.

    • 2

Place the fabric face down on a flat work surface. Fold all four edges over 1/2 inch. Iron the folded edges and secure them with straight pins. Sew along the straight pins using a sewing machine set with a straight stitch. Leave all four corners unsewn, leaving a 1/2-inch gap to allow for the awning bars. Remove the straight pins.

Add decorations to the fabric as desired. Use hot glue to attach sequins, pom poms or fringe to the edges of the fabric to match the room decor. Apply the glue to the back of the decoration and press it directly to the fabric. Let the glue dry for three to five minutes before proceeding.

Insert the top and bottom bar of the awning kit into the long pockets you created by sewing the edges in Step 2.
