How to Make a Lattice Board Wall

Lattice board walls can be built in a variety of places and in varying degrees of permanence. Popular for decoration and traffic guiding at outdoor weddings, these walls can be set up inside as well and can be used for a single event or made permanent. The basic design utilizes 2-by-4 studs as wall supports. The lattice boards attach to the outside of the studs, with each lattice board ending in the middle of a stud so that the studs support the lattice at its seams. An additional 2-by-4 board is used in between the seams for more support.

Instructions

    • 1

Set out a 60-inch 2-by-4 on the working surface. Lay it on a long, skinny side. Position a 24-inch 1-by-4 perpendicular to the 2-by-4 so that the end of the 2-by-4 butts into the exact center of the 1-by-4 to form a T. Have the 2-by-4 butt into the large side of the 1-by-4. Drill two holes through the 1-by-4 and into the end of the 2-by-4. Attach the two boards together with 1 1/2-inch wood screws. Repeat as needed depending on the length of the wall.

    • 2

Stand the 2-by-4 upright by propping it up on the 1-by-4 to make an upside-down T. Stand up three of these 2-by-4s and stretch a sheet of lattice across them so that the middle 2-by-4 is in the center of the lattice with a large surface pressing against it and each end of the lattice board comes to the exact center of a large surface of a 2-by-4.

    • 3

Set a carpenter's level on top of the lattice to ensure straightness, and position it at the desired height. Have assistants hold it in place and drill every 12 inches through the lattice and into all three 2-by-4s. Set a 1 1/2-inch wood screw in each hole and tighten them completely.

Repeat with another lattice board on the other side, spacing it the same way as the first lattice board and making sure the screws don't interfere with one another by staggering them. Continue to lengthen the wall as needed.
