How to Make a Shaker Beadboard Door

A Shaker beadboard door features a thick wooden frame around smaller, thinner boards arranged side by side. Two or more large panels of thinner boards make up a standard Shaker door. These thinner boards are kept within the frame boards by grooves in the frame, and the frame boards are secured with pegs for a metal-free, final product. A table saw and a drill, along with the experience to use them safely, are required to complete this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Run two 1 3/8-by-5-by-80 inch boards and three 1 3/8-by-5-by-24 inch boards through a table saw to cut a 1/4-inch groove along one of each boards' thin, long edges. Make the groove 1/2-inch deep and directly in the center of only one thin, long side of each board and keep the last inch on the long boards ungrooved on each end. Make a matching groove on the other edge of only one of the 1 3/8-by-5-by-24 inch boards so that both of the board's long, thin sides are grooved.

    • 2

Position the two longer boards and two of the shorter boards into a frame with the grooved edges facing inward. Slide the final short board into its place within the frame and leave a 36-inch space above it and a 29-inch space below it. Remove one of the long boards. Slide seven 1/4-by-3-by-37 inch boards into the upper space of the door and slide seven 1/4-by-3-by-30 inch boards into the lower space of the door.

    • 3

Drill two matching holes into the frame boards at each location where they contact each other so that the two holes on each board line up perfectly with each other. Set a peg into one of the holes in each pair so that there are 12 holes and 12 pegs. Push the boards together to check for fit. Make any necessary adjustments to the boards or the holes. Separate the boards and apply a bead of wood glue to each side of the pegs and along the junctions between the frame boards. Do not apply glue to the thinner boards. Clamp the frame together and let the glue dry overnight.

Position a doorknob on one side of the door, along one of the long boards about halfway. Drill out a hole for the doorknob and slide the bolt into the door. Drill out a hole portion for the latch section by drilling through the edge of the door and into the previously drilled hole. Set the latch portion of the doorknob in place and attach it to the rest of the doorknob.
