How to Cut Ambria Shades

Ambria shades are a type of Roman shade made with fabric. When you buy these shades, they may not always fit your windows. This requires that you either have them fitted professionally or you cut and sew them yourself. Thankfully, this type of shade is easily trimmed on the bottom and the side seams. You can do the adjustments with only basic sewing skills. When finished, the shade will fit neatly in your window for a professional look.

Instructions

  1. Cutting the Length

    • 1

Measure how much of the shade you want to remove. For example, if it hangs 3 inches lower than you like, you will cut off 3 inches.

    • 2

Lay the shade on a flat surface.

    • 3

Open the bottom hem with a seam ripper and remove all the threads.

    • 4

Use the measurement of the amount of fabric you want to remove from the bottom of the shade. Mark a straight edge along the cutline with chalk or a fabric pen.

    • 5

Cut along the line with sharp sewing scissors.

    • 6

Fold the fabric up so the right sides are facing out to create a new hem. Design a hem of the same width as your original hem. Pin the fabric together with straight pins.

    • 7

Iron the fabric closed for a crisp edge.

    • 8

Sew the fabric together by hand or using the top-stitch setting on your sewing machine.

    Cutting the Width

    • 9

Measure the width of the window. Add 2 inches to the measurement because the shade will pucker slightly and needs extra material to ensure the window is properly covered.

    • 10

Unstitch the seams on each side of the shades with a seam ripper. Note the size of the original hem so you can make a new hem of equal size when finished.

    • 11

Divide in half the amount of fabric you want to take off so you take an equal amount off each side. For example, if you want 3 inches off the width, take 1 1/2 inches off each side.

    • 12

Draw a line with a fabric pen and straight edge along the cut line. If you are trimming 1 1/2 inches off each side, draw a line 1 1/2 inches in from each outer edge.

    • 13

Cut along the marked line with sharp sewing scissors.

    • 14

Fold a new hem on each side equal to the original hem. Pin the hem with a straight pin every 2 inches.

    • 15

Iron the hem flat so it stays in position as you sew.

    • 16

Sew the hem closed, backstitch to secure the seam and cut your thread.
