Installation of an Alpine Sliding Door

Sliding doors by their nature are easier to install than standard doors because once installed they have a lesser need to be exactly level. This is because of the fact that a sliding door remains entirely within the frame, and does not swing out of the frame like a standard door. Alpine sliding doors are a high-quality product that further increases the ease of installation by providing a very straightforward frame with predrilled installation holes. Only basic tools are required to complete the installation, and experience with door installation will make the process go more smoothly but is not required.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the Alpine sliding door against the doorway with an assistant's help. Cut out any excess material around the doorway that is preventing the Alpine sliding door from fitting in the doorway space. Use a reciprocating saw and wood blade to clear the area. Reposition the sliding door within the space and make adjustments until the sliding door frame fits snugly within the opening.

    • 2

Spread waterproof caulking around the outside of the door frame and maneuver it back into place with the help of assistants. Set the carpenter's level against each of the four edges, pushing the two sliding doors to the middle of the frame if necessary to access the edges and the top and bottom of the frame.

    • 3

Adjust the straightness of the frame by hammering shims between the frame and the doorway. Break of any shims that stick out of the frame. Continue to position shims until the door frame reads level on all four sides of the doors.

    • 4

Use a drill and a wood drill bit with a slightly smaller diameter than the wood screws to make holes in the doorway by drilling through each of the predrilled holes in the frame. Make your own holes every 12 inches through the frame if they have not been drilled. Set a bead of caulking in each hole.

    • 5

Position a galvanized 3-inch wood screw in each hole and tighten each of them halfway into the frame. Continue to tighten the screws completely once they have all been installed halfway. Open and close the sliding doors to make sure the installation is secure.
