How to Build a Wall Frame Out of PVC

Temporary walls are used in homes to divide living spaces for a short-term basis, on stages to create dressing rooms, at trade-shows to create event booths and other venues for varying purposes. PVC is often the material of choice to build temporary walls since it is lightweight, inexpensive and easy to assemble and disassemble when the wall is no longer needed. Instead of purchasing a premade temporary wall from a specialty vendor, make your own to fit your exact needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Place four 2-inch PVC pipes in a rectangle shape on your work surface. Use two 72-inch pieces for the side of the wall and two 48-inch pieces for the top and bottom. Place the 72-inch pieces across from one another and the 48-inch pieces across from one another.

    • 2

Attach the top piece to the two sidepieces by dry fitting a 90-degree angle PVC pipefitting. Dry fitting refers to attaching the pieces together without the use of lubricant or glue. Slide the pipe into the pipefitting. If necessary, use a rubber mallet to tap the pipe and the pipefitting together.

    • 3

Place a four-way PVC Tee-pipefitting onto either end of the bottom piece. Place the fitting so the cross arms of the fitting run perpendicular to the pipe and the remaining joint on each pipefitting points the same direction.

    • 4

Insert the ends of the two sidepieces into the open joints of the four-way pipefittings so that you create the rectangle with the four pipes. The two four-way pipefittings each have two open joints extending perpendicular from the top and bottom pipes.

    • 5

Insert 12-by-2-inch PVC pipe into each of the opening four-way pipefittings. Attach a 90-degree angle pipefitting onto each of the four 12-inch pipes. Angle the open joints of the 90-degree angle pipefittings so they point inward towards the opposite side of the rectangle.

    • 6

Secure the open 90-degree angle pipefittings by inserting two 48-by-2-inch pipes into the pipefittings, creating a second rectangle shape bisected by the bottom piece you placed in Step 4. The second rectangle is the base of the wall and the first rectangle is the wall itself.

Cut a piece of fabric measuring 144-by-48 inches. If necessary, cut two pieces of 72-by-48-inch fabric and sew them together. Fold the edges of the fabric over 1/2 inch to create a 1/2-inch hem. Pin the hem down using straight pins. Sew along the pins using a straight stitch on a sewing machine. Remove the straight pins.

    • 8

Sew a 6-by-1-inch piece of double-sided Velcro to each of the four corners of the fabric. Place the Velcro so that 1/2 inch of it is on the fabric and the rest extends out from the corner. Sew the Velcro in place with a straight stitch on the sewing machine.

    • 9

Fold the fabric in half across the width. Place the folded fabric over the top of the PVC wall so that the ends hang down on either side. Wrap the Velcro tabs around the PVC pipes of the wall to secure the fabric in place.
