How to Bore Holes in a Metal Frame to Hang Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds can mount to a variety of surfaces. Each surface type has special requirement for drilling a hole to accommodate a fastener. Metal is the hardest of all the materials you are likely to encounter when mounting the blind to frames that surround windows and doors. Aluminum, stainless steel and carbon steel are all metals used in the construction of metal door and window frames. One type of drill bit has the ability to drill a hole through each type of metal without quickly dulling or overheating the metal.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold one of the mounting brackets supplied with the Venetian blind against the metal frame. Run a pencil around the inside of each bracket-mounting hole to mark the locations on the metal frame. Repeat the process to mark the mounting holes of the remaining brackets.

    • 2

Align the point of a center punch with one pencil mark. Hit the back of the punch sharply with a 16-ounce hammer. Make an indentation at each hole with the center punch and hammer.

    • 3

Secure a 1/8-inch cobalt drill bit in the drill. Coat the tip of the drill bit with cutting fluid.

    • 4

Press the tip of the drill bit in one of the center punch indentations. Hold the drill perpendicular to the metal frame. Pump the trigger of the drill to slowly drill through the metal frame. Coat the tip of the drill bit again if you notice smoke coming from the drilling area.

Clean all metal shavings from the end of the drill bit by running a wire brush across the tip of the bit. Drill each hole as described, coating the drill bit with cutting fluid before drilling each one.
