Accordion Pivot Door Installation

Accordion pivot doors make practical solutions to closets and doorways that are in tight situations, in which it would be awkward to have to swing out a large door and possibly hit another wall or block traffic in the hallway. These doors come in a variety of styles and sizes, but the basic operation method and resulting installation process does not vary, as the system is simple and effective. Installing these doors requires only very basic tools and almost no experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the door space, noting both height and width. Purchase doors that will perfectly fit within the opening.

    • 2

Position the top rail of the doors against the top of the doorway opening. Align it to make sure it is straight by setting a carpenter's level against the rail. Once the rail is straightly positioned, mark the locations of its attachment screws. Remove the rail. Drill out each screw hole using a drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the wood screws. Replace the rail and set wood screws into the holes, tightening them halfway. Recheck the rail with the level, make any necessary adjustments, then completely tighten the rail in place by tightening the screws fully.

Position the bottom rail directly in line with the top rail and check it with the carpenter's level. Make any necessary adjustments then mark the screw holes. Remove the rail and drill out the holes. Set the rail in place and attach it with wood screws, checking with the level halfway to for a straight installation.

Set the bottom of the door in the bottom rail with the handle facing out. Push down the retention pins at the top of the door and slide them into the top rail. Open and close the door a few times, then adjust the pins if necessary for a tighter or looser fit.
