How to Cover a Stone Facade

Stone facade, also known as stone veneer, is a common exterior facade for older houses, but over time, it may become chipped and worn. Depending on the look you want and your desires for your home, you may find that it makes your house look dated. You can spruce it up using a sand mix -- a commercially available mixture of sand and Portland cement -- to cover up the old facade, a technique called parging.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with sand mix until it is 1/4 filled.

    • 2

Pour water into the dry mix, mixing thoroughly with a trowel, until the mixture is still thick but easy to spread. Too much water will cause the mixture to become soupy, while too little means that it is hard to spread.

    • 3

Wet the stone facade using a sponge.

    • 4

Slather the mixture onto the stone facade using a trowel. Your first few passes fill in the gaps between the stones, while the successive passes create a smooth surface.

    • 5

Make more of the mixture as necessary. Make small batches so it does not harden in the bucket while you work.

    • 6

Allow the mixture to dry thoroughly. Depending on the conditions, this may take several hours or a full day.
