How to Hang Vertical Blinds Over French Doors

Vertical blinds are often hung in front of tall windows or French doors. Unlike horizontal blinds, door blinds are designed to sit in front of the French door far enough to accommodate the door handle. Unlike horizontal blinds that rise only to the top of the window, vertical blinds move completely to the side of the French doors, which won't impact your ability to open and close them.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the French doors, including the frame. Add 3 inches to each side for a total of 6 extra inches to the width. Add 2 1/2 inches to the total height. For example, if the total measured width is 20 inches, select a blind with a total width of 26 inches. If the total measured height is 10 inches, the total blind height required is 12 1/2 inches.

    • 2

Mark the position for the left and right mounting bracket above the patio door. Make sure the bracket mark sits two inches within and above the frame.

    • 3

Place a level with a laser light in between the two marks to ensure that they are even. If not, adjust the mark accordingly.

    • 4

Predrill a hole through each mark with an electric drill.

    • 5

Twist to toggle bolts into the predrilled holes.

    • 6

Line the mounting bracket's screw hole with the predrilled hole. Use an electric drill to secure each to the wall with a screw.

    • 7

Hold the headrail underneath the mounting brackets. Notice the mounting clips that are secured to the underside of each bracket. The clips are used to secure the headrail.

    • 8

Tilt the front lip of the headrail, and slip it into the front side of the mounting clips. Snap the back of the headrail into the rear of the mounting clip. Insert one mounting clip on both the left and right side of the headrail.

    • 9

Place the valance dust cover on the top of the headrail after it is securely in place.

    • 10

Slide the front notches of a valance clip into the headrail's front lip. Push the back of each clip down into the headrail's back clip until it snaps into place. The valance clip is placed on each side of the headrail and is used to hold the valance cover in place.

    • 11

Extend the vanes carriers -- the clips that hold the vanes -- fully. Rotate them to the open position with the beaded chain.

    • 12

Push the top of each vane into the each carrier until it snaps in place.
