How to Bend Aluminum for Window Wrapping

When weatherproofing the outside of your home, special attention should be paid to your window frames. Though older homes may rely on caulk sealant and a thick coat of paint for protection from moisture, wind and cold temperatures, outside window frame surfaces on new homes are often wrapped with aluminum. This metal wrap helps protect the underlying wood framing from the elements and makes cleaning a breeze. Before you install the wrap, each piece of aluminum must be bent to fit the unique shape of your window's frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inner and outer portions of your window's frame with a ruler. Account for the inside of the frame which extends from the base of the window, the face of the frame and the underside of the frame. Note these measurements, as they will determine the size of your aluminum piece and the distance between each bend.

    • 2

Insert a sheet of aluminum into the break. Score the aluminum with a utility knife, dragging the blade firmly across the entire length of the sheet. Ensure that your blade makes contact with the edge of the break for a straight, accurate cut.

    • 3

Bend the aluminum against the break's edge to cut the sheet. Lift the aluminum up against the break, applying firm and even pressure as you do so. Remove the scrap piece of aluminum from the break and set it aside.

    • 4

Insert the cut edge of the aluminum back into the break and make your first bend, using the measurements you took earlier for reference. Perform this step for each additional bend, referring to the measurements often to ensure accuracy.

    • 5

Place the bent aluminum wrapping over the window's frame to check for proper fit. The aluminum should wrap around the frame with relative snugness. A bit of play is to be expected, but the aluminum should not droop or fall from the frame if left untended.

Perform the above steps for each side of your window's frame. Work carefully and deliberately to ensure that each piece of wrapping fits firmly to the frame once installed.
