How to Hang Drapes With a Doorwall

Hanging drapes over a doorwall, also known as a sliding glass door, can be tricky. People and pets need access through the door and drapes can often get in the way. You don’t want sticky little fingers touching the drapes, as children exit the glass door, nor do you want pets to get entangled with the hangings. Winds can also suck curtains outside a sliding glass door, so care must be taken when planning your doorwall coverings. Using a traverse curtain rod that pulls curtains in only one direction and opens away from the door opening is a good option.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your sliding glass door. Add 5 inches to the outside width where you will screw in the bracket on the side opposite the door opening. Add 3 inches outside the door latch and also above the door.

    • 2

Purchase curtains that are one wide panel. Otherwise, you need to sew two-panel curtains together in the middle. Purchase a traverse curtain rod kit that can be adjusted to open from only one side.

    • 3

Follow the directions on the curtain rod kit. Untie the knots on the back of the curtain rod's main carrier arm and pull this out to allow the curtain rod free movement use of the full width of the curtain rod. This allows you to move both curtain panels over to one side of your doorwall.

Use a drill to install the kit's brackets with the provided screws. Expand the curtain rod and click it into place. Adjust the carriers that hold the cord inside the bracket. Pull the cord controls and lock it into place under the plastic assembly provided.

Adjust the length of the cord by pulling it. Tie and knot it into place. Attach the tension control and the cord bracket to the wall on the side opposite the door opening so you can pull on the cord and have your drapes pull to one side.
