How to Attach a Jabot to a Rod

Window treatments can give any room a stylish look. A jabot curtain is a softly folded or pleated drapery that hangs from the outer edges of the curtain rod, either as part of a longer swag or a shorter valance. Jabot curtains also provide an attractive way to hide unsightly drapery hardware from view. To ensure proper placement of your jabot curtains, you must measure very carefully. Unless you are doing a simple valance treatment for your window, you will need to hang a jabot curtain from a double curtain rod in front of the longer drapes.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window with a tape measure. Use a pencil to mark the spots on each side of the window where you will attach the double curtain rod. Check your marks using a level, adjusting them for straightness if necessary.

    • 2

Use a drill or screwdriver to make pilot holes at the marked sites for the screws for the brackets included in the double curtain rod kit. If you drill into a wall stud, the screw should provide enough stability, but if you are drilling into drywall, you will probably need to use an anchor for the screw. The exact directions can vary, so follow the manufacturer's instructions in your kit.

    • 3

Attach the brackets to the wall, and place the inner and outer rods where you can reach them easily.

    • 4

Hang the longer drapes on the inner rod and place the rod in its bracket.

    • 5

Slide the jabot for the right side onto the outer rod. If the jabot is angled diagonally, place the longer end toward the outside of the window frame and the shorter end toward the middle.

    • 6

Work the cascade, which is the middle piece of the valance, onto the outer rod so it sits next to the jabot and is centered in the middle of the rod.

    • 7

Slide the jabot for the left side onto the outer rod so it sits on the opposite side of the cascade with the longer side nearest the window frame and the shorter side nearest the center, if necessary.

    • 8

Place the outer rod with the two jabots and the cascade in its bracket. Arrange any pleats or folds on the jabots and cascade so they fall evenly and obscure any drapery hardware.
