How to Decorate on Top of Carpet Walls

When most people hear the words "wall-to-wall carpeting," they assume the phrase refers to carpeting that stretches from one wall to another. What it might imply, however, is carpeting that is actually attached to the walls -- much like wallpaper. Although this may conjure up images of thick, soft and fuzzy walls, in actuality, carpeting on walls is usually much more low-profile and subtle. Carpet walls are most often used to reduce noise levels in buildings such as libraries and hospitals. Decorating on top of carpet walls is very similar to decorating bare walls.

Instructions

Work with the design. Carpeting always has a pattern, even if it is monochrome in color. Choose artwork that complements the carpet rather than clashes with it. If your carpet is colorful, for example, choose simple, black-and-white works of art. If your carpet features swirls of blue and green, try a framed print of a green plant to bring out the green in the pattern.

Highlight the designs in the carpet. Use strips of moulding or empty picture frames. Place the frame around the design in the carpet for an instant work of art.

Use shelving. Very thick carpeting might be hard to penetrate if you want to hang up photos or art. Instead, place a graduated, open-backed bookshelf against the wall and fill it with items that will show off the carpet as well as the bookshelf.

Install a chair rail. Carpeted walls may be decorative enough on their own, but a strip of moulding, attached to the wall about 3 feet from the bottom, may be the final touch needed to give the walls a more sophisticated look. Use construction adhesive or nails to attach the moulding to the wall.
