How to Fix Curtain Rod With Carriers

Traverse rods are curtain rods with a carrier mechanism in them that allows you to easily open and close the curtains. The cords that operate the traverse rod may eventually break, especially if the curtains are made of heavier fabrics. It’s a simple matter to fix curtain rods with carriers. Look for the replacement cords at a store that sells curtains and window blinds. You might also find the cording in the notions department of a fabric store.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how much cord you need to fix the traverse rod. Measure the width of the curtain rod while it is still attached to the wall. Measure the distance from the top of the rod to the floor. Add those two amounts and add 6 inches to allow for error. Double that amount for the total amount of cording you need to purchase.

    • 2

Remove the traverse rod from its brackets on the wall. Pull the existing cord out of the rod. Lay the rod with carriers facing up on a flat work surface.

    • 3

Run one end of the cord up and over the pulley on the left side of the rod. Snag the end of the cord with a straightened paper clip pushed through the slot in the rod. Thread the cording under all the slides that hold the curtain rods.

    • 4

Insert the cording under the left master carrier, and bring the end out through the first hole in the carrier. Use the paper clip to help you guide the cord out of the hole. Tie a double knot in the end of the cord. Pull the cord back through the rod so the knot is snug in the hole you just pulled the cord through.

    • 5

Grasp the other end of the cord. Run its end between the two pulleys on the left side of the rod. Insert the cord under the slides and the left master carrier. Continue running the cord under the right master carrier. Bring the cord out the first hole on the left side of the right master carrier. Thread it back into the second hole and out the right side of the right master carrier. Run the cord under the slides on the right side of the rod.

    • 6

Thread the cord between the two pulleys on the right side of the rod, and pull it down and out the right side of the rod. Feed the cord back into the rod, over the top pulley and back out into the curtain rod.

    • 7

Push the cord under all the slides on the right side of the rod as well as the right master carrier. Thread the cord under the right side of the left master carrier and bring the end out through the hole on the right side of the carrier. Tie a double knot in the end of the cord. Pull any excess cord back through the rod to the left side.

Operate the traverse rod to take out any remaining slack in the cording.
