How to Make a Waterproof Pebble Exterior Wall

Exterior walls appear plain and uninteresting when they are finished with flat concrete or stucco. Make your exterior walls look more extraordinary by applying a decorative, waterproof finish to them. For example, make an exterior wall look more dynamic and rustic by applying pebbles over its surface. Professional craftsmen can apply pebbles onto walls, but your budget may not enable you to hire a professional. Save money by making a pebbled wall yourself using inexpensive home improvement supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a 1/2-inch thick layer of medium grout over the entire surface of the exterior wall using a trowel. Apply the grout in an even layer.

    • 2

Push round pebbles halfway into the grout, spacing each pebble 1/8 inch apart. The grout will squish out in between each pebble. Cover the entire exterior wall with pebbles.

    • 3

Scrape the trowel over the top of the pebbles, which will press any excess grout into area with too little grout.

    • 4

Wipe off the surface of each pebble using a washcloth. Allow the entire pebble-covered wall to air-dry for 12 to 18 hours.

    • 5

Fill a paint tray with clear, waterproof, exterior masonry paint and then coat a paint roller in the masonry paint. Exterior masonry paint will adhere onto stones and pebbles, keeping the pebble wall weatherproof and better able to resist damage.

    • 6

Apply the waterproof masonry paint in a medium-thick layer over the entire pebble-covered wall. Allow the pebbled exterior wall to dry for 6 hours.
