How to Make Suspended Wire Curtains

While most curtains attach to walls via rods and brackets, you can hang them on wires. Using wires to hang curtains allows you to use them as a room divider instead of just a window treatment. Hanging the wire for the curtains requires locating sturdy mounting areas to which to attach the hooks.

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure

Instructions

    • 1

Place a step stool at the left side of the area where you want to install the suspended wire curtains and climb until you reach the height you want to hang them. If you are hanging the curtains as a divider, choose a wall location on one side of a room and another on the opposite wall of the room. If you are hanging them as window coverings, choose wall locations near the window so the wire runs at least 4 to 5 inches from the window, allowing it to close easily.

    • 2

Place a stud finder on the wall. Slowly slide the stud finder left and right until you see it light up, which indicates there is a stud there. Place a small pencil mark on the wall to designate the location.

    • 3

Measure up from the floor until you reach the pencil mark and note the measurement. Reposition the step stool at the right side of the area and measure up to the same distance. Use the stud finder to locate a stud at this location and mark it with a pencil mark.

    • 4

Drill a 1-inch-deep hole through each pencil mark using a drill and 1/4-inch bit. Insert a threaded eye hook into each hole and turn them clockwise until they are firmly secure.

    • 5

Wrap the end of a thick-gauge wire around one of the eye hooks and use needle-nose pliers to wrap it back on itself to secure it. Stretch the wire all the way to the other hook, pulling it taunt. Cut off the excess using wire cutters, then wrap the end around the eye hook using the pliers.

    • 6

Attach curtain clips along the entire top of the curtain panels at equally spaced distances. Hang the hooks on the wire and pull the curtains closed over the wire. Depending on the type of clips you select, you may need to insert the rings of the clips on the wire before you secure the second end to the eye hook.
