What Is a 'Pressurized Wall'?

A pressurized wall is an answer to temporary privacy needs. While a regular wall is permanently attached to the floor, walls and ceiling, a pressurized wall is easy to install and remove. It provides more advantages of a real wall than options such as a panel room divider or sliding vinyl door.
  1. Features

    • Companies that lease or sell pressurized walls have their installers frame out the designated area in your building and attach a wall made of Sheetrock to the metal frame with screws. Pressure holds the wall in place, unlike a permanent wall that is attached to the ceiling, floor and other walls with nails or screws. This means the pressurized wall does not damage the structure of the room, and it's relatively easy to install and remove.

    Uses

    • A common usage for a pressurized wall involves splitting one bedroom into two bedrooms for roommates renting an apartment or for a family creating separate rooms for children. Expecting parents can add a nursery to their bedroom with a pressurized wall. Pressurized walls also are advantageous for creating separate offices in a workplace, making conference rooms or building new classrooms.

    Considerations

    • If you are renting, obtain permission from your landlord before you have a pressurized wall installed. Certain municipalities do not allow these walls and some building owners restrict temporary walls due to potential safety issues. Others require proof of insurance from the pressurized wall contractor. Before you move out, you must have the wall removed, which the contractor will do for an additional fee.

    Options

    • Companies that install pressurized walls are most common in large cities. If you have more than one option, shop around to find the best wall for your situation. These walls have a wide range of thickness, which is an important factor in soundproofing. Some companies provide sound insulation with all their walls, while others offer additional sound insulation at a higher cost. Some will paint the wall a specific color or even wallpaper the wall at your request. Contractors also can install a lightweight door, such as a French door. A pressurized wall usually takes four or five hours to install, according to CaliContractor. It takes longer to install large walls or walls in areas with difficult access.
