Why Vertical Blinds Don't Work

Vertical blinds are usually made from polyvinyl chloride and can be tilted to allow varying amounts of sunlight into a room. Vertical blinds are usually easy to maintain because they are water-resistant and can be wiped clean. Despite these advantages, however, vertical blinds can sometimes be ineffectual.
  1. French Window Vertical Blinds

    • French windows are large windows that often run from floor to ceiling and can be opened with handles in a similar way to patio doors. Unfortunately, these handles can often become entangled in the vertical blinds when they are drawn across, resulting in them becoming jammed and failing to block out sunlight. However, fitting a runner rail above the French windows and hanging the blinds from there can remedy this problem. This will create a gap between the door and the vertical blind to prevent the blinds catching on the window handles.

    Bathroom Vertical Blinds

    • Bathrooms and basements often suffer from humidity, resulting in excess levels of moisture. This can cause mold and mildew to form on the surface of the vertical blinds, giving them an unpleasant appearance. Mold and mildew can usually be removed with natural cleaning solutions such as vinegar.

    Bay Window Vertical Blinds

    • Bay windows are found in older-style Victorian housing and provide a large, attractive feature for living rooms. Bay windows vary considerably in sizing and shape, depending on the size of the property and when it was built. Vertical blinds are usually produced in incremental sizes up to a maximum size, which varies according to the blind manufacturer. This means they often don’t fit the larger size of bay windows. Vertical blinds customized to larger dimensions can be ordered, but this option is usually more expensive. For instance, according to Walmart's website, customers are charged an additional $45 delivery charge, as of the date of publication, for vertical blinds that are longer or wider than 90 inches in length.

    Skylights

    • Skylights are windows fitted into the roofs of rooms to provide a strong infusion of sunlight. Because of their angle, however, the light from skylights cannot be tempered with standard vertical blinds. Motorized vertical blinds are available which overcome the gravity problem and secure the blinds in place. However, these are typically much more expensive than standard vertical blinds.
