What Household Items Can You Use to Create a Rough Textured Wall?

Textured walls help hide imperfections, such as dents, scratches and gouges. You don't need to be a professional painter to create textured walls. With a little practice, you can create textured walls in your home by using items found in your household, such as tissue paper, plastic bags, an old paintbrush, a sponge and a squeegee.

Instructions

  1. Sponging

    • 1

Prepare the walls by stripping the wallpaper or old paint and removing switch plates. Move the furniture away from the walls. Cover the furniture with a drop cloth. Cover the floor with plastic or a drop cloth. Apply masking tape around the baseboards, window frames and door frames. Prime the walls if necessary.

    • 2

Pour paint -- start with 1 cup -- into a paint tray. Dip a sponge or a loofah into the paint. Let the excess paint drip into the tray. Press the sponge to the wall slightly. Don't drag the sponge. Continue applying paint to the wall. Dip the sponge into paint as necessary. Let the wall dry.

    • 3

Apply another coat of paint if necessary. Use a different color paint for the second and third coat if desired to create a slightly rough texture and marble-like look. Let the paint dry completely before applying other coats of paint.

    Strie Painting

    • 4

Prepare the walls as directed above. Apply a base coat of paint and let dry.

    • 5

Spray a paint pad slightly with water. Dip the pad into the paint tray. Apply the paint to the wall using one continuous vertical stroke. Drag a dry paintbrush or whisk broom through the wet paint vertically. Rub the brush with a rag to remove excess paint. Repeat these steps to cover the walls with vertical streaks. Let the walls dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

    • 6

Use the same method as above to apply paint horizontally and use the brush to create horizontal streaks. Let the paint dry.

    Crinkle Paper Painting

    • 7

Prepare the walls as directed above.

    • 8

Paint a wall area slightly larger than a sheet of paper you will be using. Crinkle the paper. Unfold it and apply it to the wet paint surface. Smooth the paper with your fingers where necessary.

    • 9

Apply a coat of paint over the paper with a paint roller. Repeat the steps to cover the wall surface. Overlap the paper slightly to avoid gaps. Cut excess paper off at baseboards, around window and door frames.
