How to Line Curtains With Box Pleats

Box pleated curtains add elegance and style to a window treatment. To line the curtains, the original pleats must first be removed. Pleating tape, found at fabric supply stores, allows you to repleat the curtains and pleat the new lining at the same time. Lining fabric, which should be chosen in a color that coordinates with the curtains, is also found at fabric supply stores in a variety of weights.

Things You'll Need

  • Remove the curtain pleats carefully with the scissors. Take out all top, side and bottom hems on the curtains, carefully, with the scissors.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the curtains with the tape measure to determine the amount of lining yardage needed.

    • 2

Cut the lining to the same size as the curtain. Pin and sew the lining fabric to the curtain, right sides of the fabrics facing each other, with a straight seam around the curtain edge at the hem lines, leaving a 6-inch opening, with the sewing machine. Trim any excess fabric to 1/4-inch.

    • 3

Turn the curtain to the right side through the 6-inch opening and hand stitch the opening closed with the needle and thread.

    • 4

Pin and sew the pleating tape to the top edge of the lining, 1/4-inch from each long edge. Pull the pleating cords to pleat the lined box pleated curtain.
