Find the studs in the wall where the audio rack will be installed. Mark the locations of each side of each stud for the entire area. Measure the distance between the center of one stud and the center of the next.
Flip over a shelving board and make two markings on the underside of the board, evenly spaced and the same distance apart as the shelf brackets. Position two brackets on these markings, with one flat side flush with the surface of the shelf, and the other flat side perpendicular to the shelf's surface and three inches behind the rear of the shelf. Mark the location of the bracket holes for screw attachment on the shelf board.
Drill pilot holes into each marking, using care not to break through the other side of the shelf board and damage the visible surface. Reposition the brackets over the holes and attach the brackets to the shelf using 1/2-inch wood screws.
Set the assembled shelf against the wall and place the carpenter's level on top of it in a parallel direction. Adjust the positioning of the shelf until the brackets line up over the studs and the shelf is level. Mark the locations of the bracket holes in the wall and remove the shelf.
Drill through the holes in the wall and into the studs, making sure that each hole falls on a wall stud. Adjust the positioning of the shelf accordingly if any of the holes do not fall on studs. Reposition the shelf on the wall and pass 3-inch wood screws through the bracket and into the holes. Tighten the screws down with the drill about halfway until all screws have been partially installed, then finish tightening them using this method to prevent an uneven installation. Repeat for as many shelves as necessary.
