How to Hang French Door Rods

French doors can dress up a room as well as add light. The double doors have glass-filled wooden frames instead of being solid wood. For those wanting to add window dressings to the doors, a variety of curtain styles will work well. What curtain rod you use will depend on the curtain style and look you are trying to achieve. As with the curtains, choices in rod styles are multiple. Even those inexperienced in the art of home repair will have success completing this project.

Instructions

  1. Tension Rod

    • 1

Inspect the inside window molding’s size and flatness. Measure the width of the inner molding or window frame, using a measuring tape. Utilize a tension rod if the molding’s surface is flat and at least 1/2 inch wide.

    • 2

Measure the total width of the window area of the French door. Use a measuring tape and measure from the outer edge of one side of the window to the other on the far side. Note the measurement for selecting the appropriate sized tension rod for your door.

    • 3

Hold the tension rod up to the window area on the French door. Compare the difference in size visually. Twist the rod in a counterclockwise or clockwise direction until it is approximately the size of the window area.

    • 4

Insert the tension rod into the top portion of the window area between the inner moldings. Adjust the rod as required so it sits firmly inside the window frame. Twist the rod counterclockwise to make it longer and clockwise to shorten its length. Insert another rod into the bottom portion of the door’s windows if attaching the curtain to a bottom and top rod.

    Magnetic Rods

    • 5

Measure the width of the window area of a metal-based French door. Add 3 inches to the width measurement, if the curtains will hang to the side of the window area. Add no additional inches if the curtain will cover only the windows and not extend to the side. Note the measurement so you can purchase the correct size magnetic rod.

    • 6

Place the magnetic rod level with the windows or 2 to 3 inches above and below the windows. Place a level on top of the rod to check for level. Adjust the rod if required.

    • 7

Install a second rod onto the bottom portion of the door, if needed. Use a second rod to hold the curtains in place. Install the bottom rod as you did the top, checking for level.
