How to Hang Curtain Panels With a Valance

Window treatments are not only practical, but they also add aesthetic value to a room. A valance with curtain panels flowing out from underneath it adds texture and beauty, while providing privacy. The valance should be hung on one fat rod, with the curtain panels hanging on a smaller rod -- so they can slide easily -- underneath the valance. This requires a double curtain rod, which is installed in the same manner as a standard curtain rod.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the window to determine the length of the double curtain rod. Many are adjustable. The rod should extend to between 3 and 4 inches on either side of the window, so add these inches to your measurements.

    • 2

Purchase a double curtain rod large enough to span the space. Use a pencil to mark where the brackets will be screwed into the wall on either side of the window. The brackets should be mounted 4 inches above the window. If the rod is very long, you will have need to support it in the center. Install a third bracket directly in the center above the window so that the curtain panels can completely close.

    • 3

Line up the brackets with the pencil markings and screw them into the wall. Specific instructions may vary depending on the type of bracket you purchased, so check your packaging. The brackets will have spaces for two rods -- one above the other.

    • 4

Insert the thinner rod into the sleeves sewn into the tops of the curtain panels. The panels may have tabs or grommets as well. Place the rod onto the lower part of the brackets.

    • 5

Slide the valance onto the thickest curtain rod. Place the ends of the curtain rod into the brackets. It should fit into the highest position and protrude a few inches beyond the rod that holds the curtain panels.
