How to Fix Up an Ugly Block Wall

Changing an ugly cinder-block wall into an attractive mural or wall art display is a rewarding weekend project. Consider the wall as your canvas and let your creative juices flow as you decorate the blocks with colors or scenes. A backyard wall mural displaying trees or flowers will give the illusion of a larger yard while it covers the ugly blocks. Old artwork can always be covered with a fresh coat of paint for a new palette.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray and clean exterior walls using a pressure washer or a garden hose with a pressure nozzle. Remove remaining paint with a wire brush or a paint scraper. Allow the wall to dry a minimum or 24 hours if it is in direct sunlight, drying time will be longer for a shaded wall.

    • 2

Clean interior walls with a wire brush or scraper to remove loose paint, and scrub clean with a stiff brush and mild detergent and water solution. Allow interior walls to dry at least 24 hours or longer depending on the humidity in the room.

    • 3

Fill small cracks with concrete filler. Place the concrete filler tube into a caulking gun and run a seam of filler into the crack. Wipe off excess filler with a damp cloth and allow the filler to dry according to directions.

    • 4

Paint the wall with primer using a paint roller. Select an acrylic primer designed for block walls. The primer will fill in holes and ensure the final paint will adhere to the wall.

    • 5

Select the appropriate exterior or interior acrylic paint for the final coat of paint. Trace several lines, freehand style, to represent a trailing vine on the wall. Cut templates of various sizes of leaves and add along the vine.

    • 6

Choose three or more different shades of green paint and paint the vines and leaves. Create a realistic leaf by adding veins inside the leaves.
