Removing a Copper Backsplash on a Stove

Copper backsplashes -- whether they're made up of tiles, panels or one continuous sheet -- generally are easier to remove than ceramic tile or stone. In fact, you probably can remove your old copper backsplash without damaging the drywall. If done carefully, you can install a new backsplash over the same surface with minimal prep.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any visible screws from the edges of the backsplash. Not all copper backsplashes have screws.

    • 2

Pry off the trim around the backsplash with a utility knife. If it is attached with adhesive, run the blade along the seam to loosen it.

    • 3

Place a putty knife at the corner of a copper tile, panel or the copper sheet. Gently tap the back of the putty knife to loosen it, then pry the piece away from the drywall.

    • 4

Apply heat with a heat gun on a low setting or a hair dryer on a high setting if the caulk is difficult to peel away. Put on work gloves, as the copper will be very hot. As you heat the copper, gradually peel it away from the drywall.

    • 5

Scrape the leftover adhesive or caulk with a putty knife.

    • 6

Sand the surface of the drywall with a power sander.
