How to Hang Curtains on an Aluminum Stud

Aluminum studs are located behind wall material such as drywall. If you need to penetrate aluminum studs to hang curtain rods on any wall in your home, use self-tapping screws. Self-tapping screws feature spaded tips that drill through aluminum studs before their threaded shafts penetrate the metal. Other than using specialized screws, hanging curtain rods on aluminum studs is similar to hanging them on their wood counterparts.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the curtain rod up to the wall at the location where you'll install it. Trace the right side of the curtain rod end onto the wall surface using a pencil.

    • 2

Attach a Phillips drive bit to the screw gun chuck. Equip the drive bit with a self-tapping screw.

    • 3

Place the bracket that the curtain rod will attach to onto the wall and align it with the traced line and a level. Slip the self-tapping screw tip through the slot located near the top of the bracket and thread the screw into the wall.

    • 4

Apply firm pressure to the back of the screw gun as the self-tapping screw digs into the aluminum stud behind the drywall. Slow the threading process when the screw penetrates through the aluminum stud.

    • 5

Attach the curtain rod to the hanging bracket. Set a level on top of the rod and mark the opposite side. Remove the curtain rod from the bracket.

    • 6

Hang the second bracket in the same way as the first one using a self-tapping screw. Hang the rod onto the brackets and check that it is level.

    • 7

Place self-tapping screws through the holes located near the bottom of the brackets to finish the rod installation.
