How to Do a Color Coat on a House

Applying stucco is a three-step process, with the last or top layer being the color coat that serves an aesthetic and protective purpose. Mix your desired shade of concrete color into the prepared batch of stucco to form a lasting exterior treatment that withstands natural elements and stands out in the neighborhood. Once applied over the exterior walls, cover the stucco color coat with sealer to help preserve the color.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a bag of stucco mix in a wheelbarrow. Follow label directions for the recommended amount of water you have to add to the wheelbarrow. Mix the stucco and water until it achieves a workable consistency. Add a small amount of stucco if the mix is too runny, or pour some water into a thick mix.

    • 2

Pour alkaline-tolerant concrete color in powder or liquid form into the stucco mix. Follow label directions for dosage rates based on the amount of stucco you are mixing it in. Thoroughly blend the color in the mix using a hand drill and mixing bit.

    • 3

Pack the prepared stucco on a mortar board, a 16-inch square piece of aluminum. Hold the board up to the surface you want to stucco. Scoop the stucco and apply it over the previous two layers of dried stucco already installed. Spread the stucco over the surface in circular motions until it is completely covered.

    • 4

Continue to load stucco over the exterior wall of a house, distributing it evenly over the surface. Allow the colored finish coat to set for 30 to 40 minutes.

    • 5

Immerse a sponge in water and take it out. Squeeze out excess water from the sponge. Lay the sponge on the applied stucco and turn it in circular motions to form patterns on the wall for added appeal. Skip this step if you prefer a smooth layer.

Pour concrete sealer in a pump-up sprayer. Position the nozzle 2 to 4 inches from the stucco to apply an even layer of sealer over the finish coat and preserve the color. Allow the sealer to dry for the time on the label directions before applying another coat over the wall.
