How to Make a Swinging Door Out of a Wall Hanging

Making a swinging door out of a wall hanging shows that you certainly like to fill your home with creative and clever ideas. Instead of making common café doors or louver shuttered doors, a wall hanging will add color and style to entrances in between room. The secret ingredient to pull the project together is to use a swing arm curtain rod. They’re easy to install and sturdy enough to even hold a heavy tapestry piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the door opening, from the inside left edge to the inside right edge with a tape measure. Subtract 3 inches from the measurement. Purchase a swing arm that meets your measurement, from the edge of the wall mount to the tip of the finial on the end.

    • 2

Remove the finial on the end of the swing arm rod and slide the wall hanging onto the swing arm rod. Hold the rod and hanging up to the door opening and identify the right height for the top of the hanging. Mark the spot on the edge of the doorframe with a pencil.

    • 3

Place the mounting bracket for the swing arm on your pencil mark. Use your other hand to hold up the rod and hanging. Notice where the screw holes are located. Move the mounting bracket up or down so the height of your hanging is where you want it to be. Once you are satisfied, mark a guide spot on the doorframe for the mounting bracket. Fill in the screw holes on the doorframe to use as a guide for drilling screws.

    • 4

Drill a starter hole for the screws in the doorframe inside your pencil marks for the mounting bracket. Just drill deep enough so that you have a good start for your screws. Place the mounting bracket so that the holes of the bracket line up with the starter holes. Insert the screw for the bottom hole of the mounting bracket and screw it in.

    • 5

Use a level to check and confirm that the mounting bracket is straight. Adjust the spots for the additional screws, if needed. Attach the remaining screws with your screwdriver.

    • 6

Slide the rod for the swing arm into position on the wall bracket. Follow any special instructions provided by the swing arm manufacturer to finish attaching it to the wall mount bracket.

    • 7

Remove and iron a fabric wall hanging so it hangs flat and free of wrinkles, if needed, before you hang it on the rod. Screw on the finial or end cap -- whichever style your swing arm has -- to complete the installation of your swinging door wall hanging project.
