DIY Kitchen Cabinet Pantry Piano Hinges

Replacing kitchen cabinet hinges with piano hinges creates a sturdy, smooth system for opening and closing cupboards. These hinges, which range in size from a foot to much longer, can be used easily on any size of cabinet door. The process requires the drilling of new holes, due to the way that piano hinge attachment holes are arranged, in long rows on each of the boards that are being attached. This arrangement contributes to a more durable door attachment. The hinge can be set on the cabinet in such a way that it is either visible or hidden within the cabinet enclosure.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cabinet pantry door hinges from their attachments to the frame of the cabinet using a drill and a screw drill bit. Remove the hinges from their attachments to the door as well and set the hinges and their attachment screws aside. The screws may be reused during the installation of the piano hinge.

    • 2

Measure the interior surface of the cabinet pantry door and determine the extent of available space on the inside of the door and the side board of the pantry cabinet. Chose a piano hinge that is at least 1 inch shorter than the door board. Pick multiple smaller hinges rather than one long hinge if possible to reduce the project expense.

    • 3

Position the piano hinge between the door and the side board of the cabinet. Mark the piano hinge screw attachment holes. Indicate the position of holes every inch or two to save screws rather than marking every hole.

    • 4

Drill a hole into each marking, being careful not to let the drill bit pass all the way through the board. Replace the hinge against the door and attach it in place with 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 5

Set the door and hinge against the side board of the pantry cabinet and screw them together. Use the same 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 6

Test the operation of the hinge and make any necessary adjustments to the installation if there is friction or halting movement.
