How to Attach a 2x2 to a Non-Basement Block Wall

Shelving, food pantries and closet organizers can be supported by 2-by-2 boards. They can be installed into all types of walls, including drywall, wood and non-basement block walls. Attachment into block walls requires the use of masonry drill bits, masonry screws, and preferably a hammer drill. While regular drills may be used for this installation, a hammer drill will provide additional help with installation, saving wear and tear on your shoulders and arms and creating holes more quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a 2-by-2 board on the working surface. Drill a centered hole every 6 inches through the top surface of the board. Drill the hole all the way through the board, using a drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the masonry screws with which you will be installing the boards.

    • 2

Hold the 2-by-2 board against the wall in the chosen area. Set a carpenter's level against the side of the board. Adjust the board until the bubble in the level shows that the board is straight, whether installed vertically or horizontally.

    • 3

Mark the location of the predrilled holes against the wall. Remove the board from the wall. Turn the hammer drill to the hammer setting and the highest power level.

    • 4

Drill into each hole using a masonry drill bit that is visibly smaller in diameter than the masonry screws you will be using. Back the drill out once or twice per hole to remove some of the dust that builds up within the hole during the drilling process. Drill the holes as deep as the masonry screws will go after tightening.

    • 5

Hold the board up against the wall again. Set a masonry screw in each of the completed holes. Tighten each screw halfway until all the screws have been placed. Complete the tightening of the screws until the screwheads are flush with the exterior of the board.
