How to Build Swinging Laundry Doors

Having a door to block the unsightly mess of the laundry room seems like a good idea, except that a door just gets in the way. It is frustrating to open a door with a heavy and full laundry basket in hand. Use a swinging door, built using spring hinges, so that the door opens with a push and closes behind you. Double-action spring hinges allow the door to open in either direction, for exiting and entering the laundry room. Instead of purchasing a swinging door, make one out of a bifold door. Bifold doors already have two doors, and come in many sizes. Find some that fit the doorway to your laundry room.

Instructions

  1. Mark the Walls

    • 1

Remove the pins from the hinges on the bifold door. Remove the screws from the hinges using a screwdriver or screwdriver bit with the drill. Set the separated doors aside.

    • 2

Measure 3 inches down from the top of the doorway on the left wall. Make a mark at that measurement.

    • 3

Place one of the spring hinges against the left wall so that the top of the frame wing sits just below the mark. Draw dots in the hinge holes with the pencil to mark placement for the screws. Make a mark at the bottom of the frame wing.

    • 4

Measure 2 inches below the lowest mark and draw another mark. Place the hinge so that the top of the frame wing sits just below the new mark. Draw dots in each hole.

    • 5

Measure 7 inches up from the floor on the left wall and make a mark with the pencil. Place a hinge so that the bottom of the frame wing rests just above the mark. Draw dots in each hole.

    Mark the Doors

    • 6

Hold one of the doors up against the left wall. Place one of the hinges over the marks on the wall, so that they line up. The door wing will rest over the door. Draw dots for each hole on the door.

    • 7

Repeat with the other two hinge marks.

    • 8

Mark all the holes on the right side of the door and on the second door.

    Install Hinges

    • 9

Install the top hinge on the left door and the left wall using the drill and wood screws. Follow the directions provided with the hinges. Screw the hinge so that the tension adjustment points up.

    • 10

Repeat with the other two hinges, making sure the tension adjustment points up.

    • 11

Install the three hinges on the right wall and the right door. Screw the hinges so that the tension adjustment points down.
