How to Install Faux Beams on a Curved Wall

Faux beams are non-structural beams that are installed to achieve a certain aesthetic within a room. They are often used in homes to achieve a rustic style. You can install faux beams vertically on a curved wall to accentuate the beauty of the curve. Evenly spaced beams that run vertically from floor to ceiling can actually frame the curve of the wall for a dramatic effect. The space between the faux beams is an ideal place to hang pictures or wall sculptures.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide a stud finder across the wall from one end to the other. Mark the location of each stud onto the wall with a pencil.

    • 2

Pull a chalk line from floor to ceiling along every other marked stud. Snap the chalk line in the center to transfer vertical lines onto the wall. These are the markings for the beam placement.

    • 3

Measure the height of the wall from floor to ceiling with a tape measure. Measure and mark each of the 4-by-4-by-96-inch posts to the measured length using a tape measure and pencil.

    • 4

Cut each Douglas fir post to the marked length using a miter saw. Center each post against the wall over the vertical chalk line markings.

    • 5

Drill a pilot hole through the center of the front side of the board every 8 to 12 inches using a drill equipped with a pilot hole bit. Drive trim head wood screws through the pilot holes into the wall studs using a screw gun to fasten each faux beam securely to the wall.

    • 6

Squeeze a dab of wood glue into each screw hole. Press a wood plug into each hole. Make sure that the grain of the plug lines up with the grain of the faux beam. Allow the glued plugs to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Sand the plugs flush with the surface of the faux beams using a fine-grit sanding block. Brush an even coat of wood finish over each faux beam using a natural bristle paintbrush. Allow the finish to dry for four hours and apply a second coat.
