How to Build a Dutch Window

The Dutch are known for an architectural habit of building their homes with over-sized front windows, what would probably be known as "picture windows" in the U.S. These windows are often kept free and clear of curtains so that anyone outside can see inside at night. Dutch windows are frequently decorated with plants or ornamentation lining the sill.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of 2-by-6 lumber to 48 inches long, and two pieces of 2-by-6 lumber to 36 inches long. Alternatively, if you have a specific size window you're looking for, measure the space for your window and cut the lumber to match those dimensions. Miter cut the edges of the lumber to 45 degrees so that when placed together at the ends, the lumber will form the shape of a rectangle.

    • 2

Secure the corners of the frame with clamps and glue them together with a bead of professional construction adhesive on each mitered end. Screw the frame together with two 2-inch wood screws at each corner. Drill a pilot hole to stop the screws from cracking the wood, and countersink the screws.

    • 3

Measure the interior dimensions of the frame. Cut four pieces of 1-by-1 wood, two that match the height and two that match the width. Miter cut the ends at 45 degrees so you can assemble these pieces inside the window frame to create the outer stop for the glass.

    • 4

Glue the four pieces of 1-by-1 lumber together with professional construction adhesive so they form a rectangle. Glue the rectangle into the frame with the adhesive. Wait for the glue to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use the nail gun to nail the stop frame to the outer frame with pin nails.

    • 5

Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the inner edge of the stop frame. Lay the glass down on the silicone caulk.

    • 6

Cut four more pieces of 1-by-1 wood, two that match the height and two that match the width. Miter cut the ends at 45 degrees so you can assemble these pieces inside the window frame to create the inner stop. Glue the four pieces of 1-by-1 lumber together with professional construction adhesive so they form a rectangle. Wait for the glue to dry.

    • 7

Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the outer edge of the glass you installed, and apply a coat of professional construction adhesive around the inside of the outer frame, next to the edge of the glass. Lay the frame that you assembled in the previous step on the glass so that this inner stop is secured to both the outer frame and the glass. Wait for the adhesive and caulk to dry. Use the nail gun to nail the stop frame to the outer frame with pin nails; be careful not to hit the glass with the pin nails.
