How to Conceal Around Doorways

Camouflage, the art of hiding something in plain sight, can easily be used to hide an unwanted or little-used door. By creatively decorating the space around or in front of the doorway, you draw attention away from the door, causing the eye to skip over the door and causing the brain to ignore the door, as if it weren't there. There are many different methods you can use to conceal a door.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the door, doorknob and trim around the door with the same color as the wall, so that it blends in with the wall like a chameleon.

    • 2

Hang a tapestry, kilim, curtain or poster directly over the door.

    • 3

Create a visual focus or distraction elsewhere in the room to draw attention away from the door. This could be a large painting or sculpture, an interesting light fixture or elaborate drapery arranged creatively over a giant picture window.

    • 4

Eliminate excess light sources around the area of the door, so that this area of the room is somewhat darker than other areas. In other words, place lamps elsewhere in the room. Cover nearby windows with blinds or decorative curtains, and leave them closed.

    • 5

Paint a pattern on all four walls of the room to create a visual distraction. This pattern could be horizontal or vertical stripes. Paint the pattern directly over the door as if it were not there.

    • 6

Position furniture in front of the door. If you do not use the door at all, and you know that you likely never will, place something large, like an entertainment center or armoire, in front of it.

    • 7

Position furniture so that it blocks the view of the door when a person enters the room.
