How to Change the Draw From Right to Left on a Traverse Drapery Rod

A traverse drapery rod allows you to open and close the drapes by pulling a draw cord that hangs from the rod along the side. Draperies on a traverse rod might open from the center, or they could open in one direction toward either the left or right side. You can change the draw from right to left on a traverse drapery rod by restringing the cord through the rod.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing drapery cord from the right side of the rod by cutting the knot off the end of the cord with a pair of scissors then pulling it through the pulleys and housings of the rod.

    • 2

Measure the length of the cord you removed. Add about 6 inches to the length and cut a new length of cord.

    • 3

Insert one end of the cord through the pulley housing at the far left edge of the rod. Pull the end of the cord through the housing of the overlap master carrier -- the first carrier that moves the drapes back and forth along the traverse rods. Tie a knot in the end of the cord that is large enough to prevent the cord from slipping out of the master carrier.

    • 4

Grasp the other end of the cord, thread it through the pulley at the bottom end of the draw cord along the side of the curtains and direct the end of the cord back up toward the rod.

    • 5

Insert the cord through the pulley just under the top pulley on the rod and direct the cord across the traverse rod toward the right side of the rod.

    • 6

Thread the cord between the two pulleys on the right side of the rod, up and around the top pulley and direct it back toward the left side of the rod.

    • 7

Insert the end of the cord through the overlap master carrier in the same location where you knotted the other end of the cord.

    • 8

Check the cord to ensure it is the correct length. Tie a knot in the cord to prevent it from slipping out of the master carrier. Trim off any excess cord length with the scissors.
