DIY Easy Sheer Valance

Store-bought sheer panels can be transformed into an elegant valance with a little imagination and just a few items. A simple, no-sew version of a soft and billowing sheer valance uses accents of store-bought ribbon, tiebacks or cording. The use of a spring tension inside-mounted rod makes this project a breeze. The key to creating this easy-to-make sheer valance style is arranging the poufs with the ties you select.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 1 or more ready-made sheer panels with rod pockets and headings on top (3-to-1-fullness is recommended for the width by 84-inch length)
  • 2 or more 36- to 48-inch lengths of decorative ribbon or braided cording (tiebacks with tasseled ends can also be used)
  • Spring tension rod
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Launder the sheer panels as needed. If wrinkled, place the panels in the dryer on a low setting with a damp towel to relax the fabric prior to installation. Insert the rod though the sheer rod pocket, located beneath the top heading.

    • 2

Adjust the spring tension rod and install the sheered panel inside the window opening, leaving approximately a 1-inch gap to insert the ties and for the sheer headings. Adjust the fullness evenly across the rod.

    • 3

Lay the center of your ties across the top of the tension rod, evenly distributing the two ends to the front and back of the sheer panel. They should also be equally disbursed across the width, approximately 6 to 10 inches from the outside edge, depending on your window's overall width. Loosely tie them it into place. Windows up to 54 inches wide should require only two ties, which will create one centered poof. Larger windows will require three or more ties, depending on size and characteristics of sheer fabric used.

Place the sheer panel evenly across the window, tightening the ties as needed to achieve the desired valance height. If using decorative ribbon, tie attractive bows with long, tapered streamers at the bottom. Balloons formed between the ribbon or ties should be arranged to pouf forward and can be arranged at varying heights to maximize their fullness or privacy level.
