Measure with a tape measure the width of the window opening between the side jambs. Record this width in inches in your notepad.
Multiply the recorded window width by the fullness factor you prefer. For example, contemporary curtains can have a fullness factor ranging from 1 to 1.25. If the panels show a scene, a flatter hang with a fullness factor of 1 will display the scene to its best advantage. If you prefer a traditional, ruffled look, the fullness factor can range from 1.5 to 2. For example, if your window opening measures 25 inches wide, use a calculator to multiply 25 inches by a fullness factor of 1.5 to calculate 37.5 inches, or 38 inches when rounded up to a whole number. Record this width in inches in your notepad.
Bring your notepad with the recorded dimensions to the store. Divide this recorded width in inches by the actual width of the lace panel to calculate the number of panels to purchase. In this example for traditional curtains, if the panels measure 20 inches wide, divide 38 inches by 20 inches to calculate 1.9 or 2 panels, when rounded up to the next whole number. Purchasing two panels will provide enough coverage and a graceful, gathered effect in your window.
