Easy Handkerchief Window Treatment

Apply spray starch to your vintage handkerchiefs and iron them to remove wrinkles and give them a crisper body. Use approximately six 12-inch-square handkerchiefs for an average 30-inch-wide window. As handkerchief sizes can vary, the amount and size needed for this project are rough estimates. If your handkerchiefs are bigger or smaller, or your window is wider or narrower, add or subtract handkerchiefs as needed.

Fold each handkerchief in half diagonally, right-sides facing out, to make triangles. Iron the fold to crease it. The fold becomes the top edge of the window treatment.

Lay the handkerchief triangles on your work surface, with the fold running horizontal on the top edge and the point of the triangle on the bottom.

Place the handkerchiefs in a single row, from left to right. Overlap the points that are touching by approximately 1 inch.

Attach a ring cafe curtain clip to the left point of the first handkerchief, on the top folded edge. Attach another clip to the first overlapping points to the right. Continue to attach a clip to each of the remaining overlapping points, ending with a clip on the right point of the last handkerchief on the right. Note: Attach most ring cafe curtain clips by squeezing the ring to open the clip. Insert the fabric into the clip and release the ring. Read the package instructions for your clips.

Thread the rings on your cafe curtain rod and hang the handkerchief window treatment as a valance. Adjust each individual handkerchief with the folded top edge protruding outward.
