Unique Sheers for Windows

Sheers, curtain panels thin enough to see through, are commonly made of voile; however, a variety of prints and different materials can turn this basic, often inexpensive window treatment into something one-of-a-kind. While an assortment of sheers are on the market, remember that you can also use basic voile and, with a few tweaks, hang it so that it looks completely different.
  1. Lace

    • Lace sheers take curtain panels to an entirely new level, adding romance and elegance to a space. While standard sheers often seem flimsy, lace pieces have more weight without significantly blocking natural light or the view. They’re suitable for nearly any room of your home when you choose the right style. In the master, a sheer black lace paired with heavier drapes is seductive, while a crisp white crocheted lace appeals in a young girl’s room. For kitchens, opt for a cutwork lace in a sheer pastel shade, and hang needle-lace sheers in an elegant dining or living room.

    Ruffles

    • Sheers are often categorized as feminine, and ruffled sheers make this distinction even more apparent. Tiered, ruffled sheer curtains have more heft than their standard counterparts, and their fullness and texture impart a sumptuous feeling in a room. Statement-making in a family room and bedroom done up in shades of pastel, this sheer curtain also has a practical benefit: While still letting in plenty of light, the ruffles more adequately block the views, making an additional layer of drapery an option rather than a privacy requirement.

    Bold Colors and Prints

    • Sheers are often solid and in more muted colors. Yet a shocking pink dye or a geometric applique detailing makes this inexpensive window treatment a bit more interesting. This spin on sheer curtains allows for plenty of light and maintains an airy quality without blending in with the room’s surroundings. A detailed trim around the border or striped- and checkered-patterned sheers are slightly subdued versions, yet still more exciting than a basic sheer.

    Installation Methods

    • Even a basic white sheer becomes more distinctive when installed properly. Over a window, a sheer curtain is easy to overlook, yet when used to create a canopy over your bed, it becomes the room’s focal point. Arranging different-colored sheers on the same rod creates a dramatic striped look, while looping the sheers over the rod to create an asymmetrical scarf lets it stand out more. The wider the fabric or total width of the sheer panels you use, the more noticeable the texture or color of the sheer. If you want to take that basic burnt orange sheer and make it more opaque, group it with two to three other matching sheers on the same rod, bunching the fabric together.
