Crystal artisan Jim Freeman tells visitors to his website, FeelBohemian.com, that the term "Bohemian" refers to the Czech region of Europe before World War II, which was famous in the glass trade.
While the craft was thought to be lost during the war, families in small villages continued creating the glass, which is enjoying a resurgence today. It is also known as "mountain crystal."
The levels of lead in crystal vary by location. To the Czechs, lead crystal is defined as refined, high-quality glass with at least 24 percent lead content.
The higher lead content in Bohemian crystal makes it easier for artisans to engrave and design.
Lead makes the crystal refract more light. The result is that Bohemian crystal shows colors when exposed to light.
