How to Make a Vase From a Mason Jar

Painting the Jars

  Wash your Mason jars thoroughly with soap and hot water. Make sure they're free of any food stains or residues. Wait for them to dry completely.

  Paint your jar in select areas using the jar's pattern as an outline. If your jar does not have a pattern or text, paint a design of your choice. To dry, follow the paint manufacturer's recommended instructions. You might have to put the jars in the oven to dry the paint.

  Pour water or place stones in the jar. If you're using fresh flowers, add enough water to fill half to three-quarters of the jar; add flower food as directed. If you're using dried flowers, you can leave the jar empty or add polished stones of any color. You can find stones or marbles at an arts-and-crafts store. Add enough stones to line the bottom of the jar.

  Tie a ribbon around the rim for added effect. Choose a ribbon that matches the type of event and the colors you're using to decorate.

Covering the Jar with Tissue Paper

  After washing and drying your Mason jar, place the item in the center of one sheet of tissue paper. Pull the tissue paper over the jar to cover it completely. Take a piece of ribbon and tie it around the mouth of the jar. Use a ribbon long enough to create a large glorious bow. Fluff out the top of the tissue paper to make it attractive and allow for room to insert the flowers.

  Trim the stems of your flowers to suit the height of the jar. The height you choose will depend on the look you want to achieve. If you're using dried or artificial flowers, you might have picked flowers to fit the height of your jar. You can tape extension stems onto them if they're too short. Look for artificial flower materials at arts-and-crafts store.

  Place your flowers in the jar, arrange them and place them in their proper spot. Use decorative accessories such as floral placemats, doilies or patterned table cloths to enhance the look of your arrangement.

  Make multiple Mason-jar vases and place all of the arrangements together for a glorious look. Use jars of different sizes and vary on the height of the flower stems to create contrast among the arrangements.
