Twigs and Spring Flowers

• In early spring, a mixture of twigs and flowers helps to unite the ending season of winter with the upcoming warmer months. In a vase, intersperse bare twigs or small branches with spring flowers such as daffodils or tulips. Make the arrangement appear modern by keeping it simple and not overcrowding the vase. Utilizing a unusual shaped vase, such as square or rectangular, provides a contemporary look to the arrangement. The twigs will last for a long time while the flowers may need to be replaced once wilting begins. • As flowers begin to die in the fall, create a modern look by using fall twigs and leaves. In the U.S. southern states do not experience fall, so this type of arrangement works best if you live in the north. Modern arrangements tend to utilize natural materials in order to create a look that is seasonally appropriate as well as sustainable for the environment. Try using fall twigs and branches that have a monochromatic palette, such as twigs with orange leaves and orange berries. If you have flowers available in the same color palette add a few to the arrangement.

• Twigs with berries on them add an extra element of interest to an arrangement. Explore using many small receptacles grouped together with one flower or twig in each. Remove all dead or dying leaves from branches before placing them in arrangements. Try using flowers of the same or similar color in an arrangement, but with different sizes and textures to create visual interest and appeal. Many flower arrangements in the U.S. tend to be overly crowded and bright, so keep it modern by having clean and simple lines.
