For sparkle, decorate a vase or a cluster of vases with a small strand of Christmas tree lights. Coil the strand of lights inside a glass vase. Pull the strand's plug end out the top back of the vase and insert into an outlet. Experiment with colored and blinking lights or larger bulbs. Never add liquids or flammable items to a vase with lights inside.
Coat glass vases with a special finish to give them a frosted look. You will need a glass vase or hurricane lamp, masking tape and frosted glass finish spray. Place masking tape strips on your clean glass vase in a pleasing pattern. Apply the frosted glass finish to the vase according to the manufacturer instructions. Peel off the masking tape once the finish is dry.
Add colorful Christmas ornaments in various sizes for a holiday table centerpiece. Large glass vases, hurricane lamps and deep glass bowls work best for this design. For Hanukkah, fill your vase with blue and silver ornaments. Show off red and pink ornaments in a vase for Valentine's Day. For a birthday decoration, fill a vase with ornaments you've made from family photos.
Decorate a clay vase or terracotta pot with latex or acrylic paint. Before painting, seal the surface of the clean vase inside and out with a craft acrylic sealant. Paint the outside of the vase with a background color, adding two or three coats. Use paintbrushes and sponges to paint patterns and images over the background color. Add sunflowers, hummingbirds, polka dots or geometric shapes to embellish your painted vase.
