Kinds of Vases

The style of the vase you choose is one of the most important decisions to consider when creating a display. Whether displaying dried flowers, live flowers or silk flowers, choosing the right vase style should remain your first consideration. The kind of vase will depend, in part, on the type and size of the flowers you wish to display.
  1. Urn-Shaped Vase

    • An urn-shaped vase, a perfect choice for flowers with long stems, allows for a beautiful display of tulips, lilies, peonies and other flowers that require extra space to open. Flowers like tulips need a vase that allows them adequate space to blossom and move around. For best results, place the flowers around the outside of the vase first, and then fill in the center to complete the look.

    Bubble Vase

    • A bubble vase often features a ruffled opening that works to keep the arrangement loose. Vine flowers may develop mildew if held too tightly in their vase, making the bubble vase the perfect choice. Vine flowers like sweet peas, generally only 10 in. high, sit best in a low vase when casually dropped into the container so the flowers can fall around it.

    Cylindrical Vase

    • A cylindrical vase, with its tall and narrow design, works well to hold flowers that feature a bulky stem or branch in an upright position. When used to hold flowers like hydrangeas or lilacs, this type of vase will allow the arrangement to have a controlled appearance. When arranging the flowers, trim each stem to a different length, which helps give the arrangement a more natural appearance. For flowering branches, trim them at an angle and then splay the end with a light hammer tap. This ensures the flowers can draw plenty of water, encouraging them to last longer.

    Floor Vase

    • The floor vase adds a modern look to any room. Normally found holding dried flower arrangements, they also work well to hold long stemmed flowers. Decorative items like cattails, that dry beautifully, make a perfect accent in a floor vase when added to the corner of a room.
