Instructions

    • 1

Drill six to eight drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket. This is essential for you to be able to use it as a planter.

    • 2

Wash the outside of the bucket well to remove any dirt or grease that may be on it. Dry it thoroughly. Let it sit in a warm place for a few hours to make sure the surface is completely dry.

    • 3

Spread newspapers out to protect your work surface. Be sure anything behind the work area or off to the side is protected, as spray paint can drift. Work outside if possible.

    • 4

Spray the surface of the bucket with a base color. Be sure to cover all parts. Depending on the paint and the color you are using, you may need to use two coats. If the paint looks thin, it is best to let it dry and add a second coat, since trying to use too much at once will cause drips and runs. Let the paint dry completely.

    • 5

Stick stencils to the bucket with poster adhesive. Make sure the stencils are stuck tightly to the surface so that no paint can get under them when the next coat is sprayed on. Use a theme for your bucket, such as jungle animals on a bucket intended to hold a palm tree, or butterflies on a bucket to be used for flowers.

    • 6

Paint over the stencil cutouts with a contrasting color of spray paint. If it requires two coats, allow the first coat to dry before you spray on the second coat. Carefully remove the stencils and adhesive when you are done.

    • 7

Seal the outer surface of the bucket with spray sealer to keep the paint from being destroyed by spilled water. When the sealer dries, the bucket is ready to use.
