How to Arrange Dried Grasses in a Tall Vase

A tall vase needs an arrangement with height to balance the large scale of the vase. One way to add height is using decorative grasses, which can be turned into an arrangement on their own. Dried grasses will last through multiple seasons or can be put away in storage until you want to use them again. Preserve grasses grown in your garden or collect them from the wild.

  Select a variety of dried ornamental grasses, such as pampas grass, wild grasses, fountain grass, from a craft store. Or dry grasses harvested from your garden or the wild by tying them into bundles and hanging them upside down in a dry, dark, warm place with good air circulation for one to three weeks.

  Cut your tallest grasses to double the height of the vase, and place them into the vase. This establishes a balanced silhouette for your arrangement.

  Cut more grass at varying heights and work from the back to front of the vase to fill in the arrangement, finishing with shortest grasses in the front. To make an arrangement that will be viewed from all sides, place the tallest grasses in the middle of the vase and the shortest grasses around the edges.

  Add accents to the grass arrangement. Try stalks of grain, dried flowers, colorful dyed pampas grass or cattails. Vary the heights of the accent materials, and use three or five of each item.

  Display the dried grass arrangement on a table, sideboard, mantel or on the floor.
