How to Make Stencils for Painting Designs on Walls

You can add designs to your painted walls even if you don't have any artistic talent --- with the help of stencils. While you could purchase precut stencils to create your patterns, you might not be able to find the perfect design for your home decor. Instead of settling for a ready-made stencil that isn't quite right, you can make your own with a few inexpensive materials. Best of all, your homemade stencils will be reusable, so you can store them away for future projects after you use them on your walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pattern for your stencil. A pattern can consist of a design that you created and printed from your computer, a piece of wrapping paper, a drawing or a piece of patterned fabric.

    • 2

Tape the pattern to a flat surface and layer a blank stencil sheet over it. Tape down the edges of the stencil sheet as well to hold it in place.

    • 3

Trace the pattern onto the blank stencil sheet, using a felt-tipped marker or a grease pencil.

    • 4

Remove the stencil sheet and tape it to a piece of plywood or a thick piece of cardboard. This will prevent damage to your table or countertop.

    • 5

Cut out the pattern on the stencil sheet, using a craft knife. Work slowly, and try to carefully follow the lines you made in Step 3.

    • 6

Remove the tape when you've finished cutting. Your stencil is now ready to use.
